| Description | (PSC) - The material in this collection was donated to the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego by Paul Schraer between 2002 and 2006. There are two parts to the collection.  This finding aid is for Box 1, the Beth Jacob Congregation. Paul and Lottie Schraer had been members of Beth Jacob Congregation since the 1950's.  Paul Schraer had been the historian of the congregation and was president from 1959-1960. New accessions added May 4, 2006 were: newspaper clippings, photographs, misc. papers regarding Beth Jacob congregation. Added from Barbara Hurwitz Collection on 2/18/2010: 1953 Commemoration Booklet for Dedicationof Beth Jacob Synagogue, Founded April 1, 1939. Added by Laurel Schwartz 10/26/10 First newsletter of Beth Jacob Congregation - xeroxed one page Beth Jacob Congregation was founded in 1939 as a conservative congregation. Their first home was at 3206 Myrtle Ave at the corner of 32nd St. in North Park. Sandor Goldberger was the first president. Rabbi Baruch Stern became rabbi in 1947 and by 1953 the congregation had built a new synagogue on 30th St between Meade and Monroe Avenues. They remained there until 1977 when they moved to a new synagogue at 4855 College Avenue where they remain in 2021. Since the late 1970's Beth Jacob has been an orthodox congregation. Paul Schraer 1920 - 2019. After service in WWII Schraer married Lottie, his wife of 72 years, and moved to San Diego. He was immediately hired by Ratner Clothing and became shipping foreman, a job which he held for 38 years. Paul was very active with Beth Jacob Congregation, serving as president, board member and historian. |
